Love Letters to the Lake
Why Lake Superior Is the Perfect Place for an Engagement Session
There's something about Lake Superior that makes people slow down. Maybe it's the endless horizon, the sound of waves rolling onto shore, or the way every sunset feels completely different from the last. Whatever it is, the lake has a way of making everything else feel a little quieter. It's one of the reasons I find myself returning here again and again, both with and without my camera.
When couples ask where they should have their engagement session, my mind almost always goes to the shoreline. Not because it's the most popular location in Marquette, but because it offers something you can't recreate anywhere else. The lake never looks the same twice. One evening, the water is calm enough to reflect the sky, and the next, the waves are crashing against the rocks, filling the air with mist and the kind of energy you can feel in your chest.
I don't believe engagement photos should feel like a photoshoot. I think they should feel like spending an evening together in a place that means something. We'll wander down little trails, stop when the light catches the water just right, and take our time exploring. There isn't a checklist or a perfect pose we're trying to accomplish. Instead, I want you to remember how it felt to laugh together when the wind picked up or to sit quietly on a driftwood log while the sun disappeared behind the horizon.
One of my favorite things about photographing along Lake Superior is that every couple naturally makes the experience their own. Some people kick off their shoes and walk along the edge of the water, while others wrap themselves in a blanket and watch the waves. Some want to climb out onto the rocks, and others are happiest wandering through the pine trees that line the shore. The location stays the same, but the story is always different.
The Upper Peninsula has a rhythm that's hard to explain until you've spent time here. The weather changes quickly, the light shifts by the minute, and sometimes the best moments happen when things don't go exactly as planned. I've learned not to chase perfect conditions because some of my favorite sessions have happened beneath cloudy skies, in the middle of a breeze, or just after a summer rain. Lake Superior has a way of turning those unexpected moments into something beautiful.
If you're dreaming of engagement photos that feel natural, adventurous, and true to who you are, there's no place I'd recommend more than the shores of Lake Superior. We'll explore, follow the light, and leave plenty of room for the unexpected. Years from now, I hope these photographs remind you not only of what you looked like, but of what it felt like to stand together on the edge of one of the most beautiful places in Michigan.
Before You Go
Best seasons: Late spring through fall, though every season brings its own kind of beauty.
What to wear: Comfortable outfits you can move in, layers for changing weather, and shoes you don't mind getting a little sandy.
Bring: A blanket, your favorite drink, and a sense of adventure.
My advice: Don't let an imperfect forecast scare you away. Around Lake Superior, some of the most memorable evenings begin with clouds, wind, or a little rain.
With love, Em
